About HalalBuzz

Frequently asked questions and how our platform works

What is HalalBuzz?

HalalBuzz is a community-powered directory of halal restaurants and food trucks across the United States. Our mission is to make it easier for people to find halal dining options near them by bringing together information shared by community members like you.

How Does HalalBuzz Work?

HalalBuzz relies on community contributions to build and maintain our restaurant directory. Here's how it works:

  • Restaurant suggestions: Anyone can suggest a halal restaurant to be added to our directory. All suggestions are reviewed before being published.
  • Crowdsourced attributes: Community members can contribute details about restaurants — such as whether they serve zabiha halal meat, have a prayer area, offer catering, and more.
  • Community validation: When multiple community members confirm the same information about a restaurant, that attribute is applied to the restaurant's profile. This helps ensure the information reflects what the community collectively reports.
  • Report inaccuracies: If you notice incorrect information on a restaurant page, you can flag it using the Report button so we can review and correct it.

Is the Halal Information Verified?

No. HalalBuzz does not independently verify or certify the halal status of any restaurant. All information on our platform is user-reported and community-sourced.

We are not a halal certification body, religious authority, or food safety organization. The information displayed on HalalBuzz reflects what community members have reported — it is not an endorsement, guarantee, or certification of halal compliance. We strongly recommend confirming halal status directly with the restaurant before dining.

What Does “Community-Reported” Mean?

“Community-reported” means the information comes from people in the community — not from HalalBuzz staff, official inspections, or certification agencies. When you see details about a restaurant on HalalBuzz, those details were contributed by community members who have visited or know about the restaurant. While we use a voting system to surface information that multiple people agree on, this is not a substitute for independent verification.

Understanding Halal

The concept of halal (permissible) food is an important part of Islamic dietary law. However, it's important to understand that there are varying interpretations and standards:

  • Different schools of thought: Islamic jurisprudence includes several schools of thought (such as Hanafi, Shafi'i, Maliki, and Hanbali), each with their own rulings on what constitutes halal food. What one school considers permissible may differ from another.
  • Zabiha vs. non-zabiha: Some Muslims follow strict zabiha (hand-slaughtered) requirements, while others accept meat from People of the Book (Ahl al-Kitab) as permissible. Personal practice varies widely.
  • Certification standards: Different halal certification bodies may have different standards and processes. There is no single universal halal certification standard.
  • Personal responsibility: We encourage every user to do their own research and make decisions based on their personal understanding and comfort level. HalalBuzz provides community-reported information as a starting point, not as a definitive ruling.

How Can I Contribute?

There are several ways you can help grow and improve HalalBuzz:

  • Suggest a restaurant: Know a halal restaurant that's not on HalalBuzz? Submit a suggestion and we'll review it.
  • Add attributes: Visit any restaurant page and contribute details like halal status, features, and menu items. When enough people confirm the same information, it becomes part of the restaurant's profile.
  • Report inaccuracies: If you notice wrong information, use the Report button on the restaurant page to let us know.

How Do I Report Inaccurate Information?

Every restaurant page has a Report button in the header area (next to the Like and Share buttons). Click it to open a form where you can select the type of issue — such as wrong hours, incorrect halal information, permanently closed, or wrong contact details — and provide optional additional details. Our team reviews all reports and takes action to correct information as needed.
